🤖 Who's Really 'Open' in AI?

Plus: Claude's New Analysis Tool and Denmark's AI Investment

Hello AI Enthusiast,

This week in AI, OSI is setting new standards for what counts as "open" in AI, putting pressure on companies like Meta. Meanwhile, Claude got a powerful feature with real-time code analysis, and Denmark joined the AI race with a top-20 supercomputer. Let's break down what these changes mean for the industry.

Before we dive into this week's news, here's something important: our next Bootcamp cohort starts November 11th. If you want to go beyond just using ChatGPT, Claude, and other AI chatbot and learn to integrate the technology that powers them into the tools you use daily, our program is perfect for you. Want more flexibility? Our new membership gives you unlimited access to all cohorts for a full year, plus access to all the rest of our programs.

The Big Picture 🔊

OSI Defines what 'Open Source’ means

The Open Source Initiative (OSI) has defined “open-source AI” as systems that provide access to training data, complete code, and settings or weights, challenging models like Meta’s Llama, which restricts data access and commercial use. Meta disagrees with OSI’s rigid definition, citing the complexities of modern AI.

We have always considered models like Meta's LLama not completely open source, and now, somebody has put clear criteria around it (btw we fully agree with OSI's definition).

Meta's storytelling has centered on their openness compared to competitors. Though with no real consequences for "open washing" yet, they'll likely stick to this narrative.

Claude Adds Code Analysis

The new analysis tool in Claude allows for complex math, data analysis, and code execution directly within the platform, enhancing accuracy and reproducibility of results. By functioning like a data analyst, Claude can now systematically clean, explore, and analyze data, providing precise and verifiable answers.

Anthropic has been really good at identifying user needs, especially in business. These models are predictive and not built for mathematical precision, but they cleverly solve this limitation by using code to deliver accurate results.

Their Artifacts feature made everything simpler combining interactive document creation with ongoing conversation.

Denmark's New AI Supercomputer

Denmark’s new AI supercomputer, Gefion, powered by NVIDIA’s DGX SuperPOD, aims to advance research in fields like quantum computing, drug discovery, and the green transition. A joint effort by the Novo Nordisk Foundation, EIFO, and NVIDIA, Gefion in offering AI infrastructure for Danish researchers and industries.

This supercomputer ranks among the top 20 most powerful in the world. Denmark's investment in both private and public sectors shows real commitment, and this will likely attract talent to companies and universities now that they have access to such computing power.

As a Danish company, we're happy about this development.

Bits and Bobs 🗞️

  • The European Parliament launched “Archibot,” an AI assistant powered by Anthropic’s Claude, to make over 2.1 million official documents from its archives easily accessible and searchable worldwide.

  • After Apple initially cited EU tech rules, particularly the Digital Markets Act (DMA), as a reason for delaying the European launch of Apple Intelligence, it is now set to debut in the EU in April 2025.

  • Midjourney has launched a new "Edit" feature that allows users to upload and modify their images using AI, transforming styles and textures while maintaining key elements and spatial relationships.

  • AI image startup Ideogram has launched "Ideogram Canvas," a platform that allows users to upload and extensively edit images using AI tools like Magic Fill and Extend.

  • After being sued by the Wall Street Journal and New York Post, Perplexity argues the lawsuit misrepresents its operations and stresses the importance of collaboration between tech and media.

  • Runway's new Act-One tool simplifies the complex process of facial animation by allowing creators to animate characters using only a simple video, eliminating the need for expensive motion-capture equipment.

Last week, three AI Coaches flew to New York City to collaborate with Design Sprint Academy in a hackathon, helping a company build AI prototypes to solve challenges set by their executives. We started by defining the audience and solutions, then got hands-on, building prototypes in just a few hours. Later, we showed these demos to the executives who had set the challenges. It’s inspiring to see companies drive innovation through collaboration and cutting-edge technology, turning concepts into potential products. If you’d like to bring this kind of innovation to your company, reach out to us!
