How to use NotebookLM Mind Maps to extract insights from document piles

Reading Time: 4 minutes

Hello AI Enthusiast,

Ever spent hours staring at a pile of research documents, wondering how to make sense of all that information? In today's newsletter, we're tackling one of the most common workplace headaches: information overload.

The Problem

Research can be a mess. You're juggling dozens of documents, trying to extract meaningful insights while drowning in information.

You end up spending more time organizing information than actually using it. And that 80-page industry report isn't going to summarize itself by tomorrow's meeting.

How to Use NotebookLM Mind Maps

Google's NotebookLM recently launched a feature that transforms the way you digest information: Mind Maps. This visual tool automatically extracts main concepts from your sources and organizes them into an interactive branching diagram. Let us walk you through how to use it with a practical example.

Step 1: Set Up Your Notebook

First, you'll need to create a notebook in NotebookLM and upload your research materials. The system works best when you feed it multiple related documents, giving it enough context to identify meaningful patterns.

  1. Head to NotebookLM

  2. Create a new notebook or open an existing one

  3. Upload your documents (PDFs, Google Docs, text files, etc.)

For our example, we've created a notebook containing all the free materials from our "Practical Introduction to ChatGPT" course. This includes YouTube video lessons and PDFs—perfect for testing how Mind Maps handle educational content.

Step 2: Generate Your Mind Map

Once your sources are loaded, generating a Mind Map is surprisingly simple:

  1. Look for the "Mind Map" chip in the chat section or directly ask NotebookLM to "create a mind map of my sources"

  2. Click it, and NotebookLM will start analyzing your documents

The system typically takes about a few seconds to generate your map, depending on how much content it's processing. What you'll see next is a visual representation of all the main topics and subtopics from your research.

Looking at our ChatGPT course materials, the Mind Map immediately organized content into logical branches like "ChatGPT Usage & Prompting," "Applications of Generative AI," and "Prompt Library"—giving a bird's-eye view of the entire course structure in seconds.

Step 3: Navigate and Explore Your Map

This is where things get interesting. Your Mind Map isn't just a static image—it's a fully interactive tool for exploring your research:

  • Use the mouse wheel or trackpad to zoom in and out

  • Click and drag to move around the map

  • Click on any node to expand or collapse its branches

  • Click on specific topics to ask follow-up questions directly in chat

Step 4: Leverage Your Map for Deeper Understanding

The real power of Mind Maps comes from how you use them. Here are some techniques that work particularly well:

  • Summarize sections: Click any concept and you’ll automatically get more info about the topic selected through the chat

  • Ask specific questions about nodes: Request info of specific branches for quick understanding

  • Find connections: Ask "How does [Topic A] relate to [Topic B]?" to uncover relationships between different branches

Step 5: Share Your Insights

Once you've explored your Mind Map, you can easily share it with teammates:

  • Download the Mind Map as a PNG file using the download button in the top right corner

  • Share your entire notebook with collaborators (they'll see the same Mind Map)

  • Export key insights discovered through your Mind Map exploration

Your Turn: Practical Applications

Ready to try this yourself? Here's a quick exercise:

  1. Pick something you're working on. A client project, a new skill you're learning, or background research for your next meeting.

  2. Gather 3-5 related docs. Articles, reports, or even meeting transcripts work great.

  3. Upload to NotebookLM and generate your Mind Map.

  4. Ask these questions:

    • "What are the three most important concepts here?"

    • "What unexpected connections exist between these ideas?"

    • "What's the most debated aspect of this topic?"

The goal isn't a pretty visual—it's turning that reading pile into insights you can actually use.
