Hello AI Enthusiast,

Pope Leo XIV issued his first encyclical this week, and AI was the topic. Meanwhile, OpenAI keeps pushing Codex deeper into enterprise environments, and the protocol that powers AI integrations just got its biggest update since launch. Let's get into it.

The Big Picture 🔊

Pope issues AI encyclical

Pope Leo XIV released his first encyclical, "Magnifica Humanitas", calling for strong regulation of AI and urging developers to prioritize the common good over profit. The document warns against AI in lethal military decisions and criticizes the concentration of power in a few private companies. Anthropic co-founder Christopher Olah spoke at the Vatican presentation, welcoming the Pope's criticism as a necessary external check on the industry.

he Pope is the world's biggest influencer, and some people building AI are Catholic and might actually be moved by this. Anthropic's presence at the Vatican makes strategic sense too: AI risks a public backlash if trust isn't built now.

The encyclical probably won't stop AI in warfare, but on job loss and power concentration, public pressure can matter.

Codex goes enterprise

OpenAI's coding agent Codex is growing fast and this week OpenAI announced a batch of new features, including goal mode (where you define an outcome and let Codex keep working toward it), plugin sharing for teams, and better browser tools. At the same time, OpenAI partnered with Dell to bring Codex into on-premises and hybrid enterprise environments, connecting it to the data and systems companies already use.

Codex keeps getting more capable. Goal mode, plugin sharing, better browser tools, these are the kind of updates that make it useful for more teams.

The Dell partnership is also a first step toward removing one of the last barriers for companies that want to adopt AI but haven't done it yet, those running on local infrastructure.

Codex is expanding, and the list of companies with no technical reason to avoid AI tools is shrinking. The next question is whether their teams know how to use them. Our Corporate AI Training helps companies move from having access to AI to actually getting value from it.

MCP gets a major overhaul

The protocol that lets AI tools connect to external services, MCP, just received its biggest update since launch. The main change: it no longer requires a persistent connection to work, making it much easier and cheaper to run at scale. The update also adds support for interactive interfaces, better handling of long-running tasks, and a formal policy for how the protocol will evolve going forward.

MCP was already becoming the standard for connecting AI to external tools, but scaling it was technically painful. This update removes that friction.

More software companies will now build MCPs, which means AI tools will connect to more of the software you already use. At some point, having an MCP will simply be expected.
