How to use Claude Styles to communicate the way you want

Reading Time: 5 minutes

Hello AI Enthusiast,

Today, we're exploring how to make AI interactions more personal and effective using Claude. We'll show you how to leverage this powerful customization tool to make AI communications work better for your specific needs.

The Problem

Many of us struggle with getting AI to communicate in a way that matches what we have in our mind. Most of the time we get a result and “something” doesn’t feel right. We end up spending more time editing the answers from AI models until we feel like it sounds more like us and spend more time doing this.

Whether you're writing technical documentation, creating marketing content, or managing projects, having to constantly adjust an AI's output to match your desired tone and format can be very frustrating. Claude created styles feature to address exactly that.

How To Use It

Let's break down how to use Claude Styles to get responses that feel right from the start. You have two options to start with:

A) Use Preset Styles

Find the "Choose style" dropdown next to the model selector and pick from:

  • Normal: Claude's default balanced tone

  • Concise: Short, direct responses

  • Formal: Polished, professional language

  • Explanatory: Detailed, educational content

Pro tip: You can manage which presets appear in your menu by hiding them through the "Create & Edit Styles" option.

B) Create Your Own Custom Style

Let's look at how we created our AI Academy Copywriter style. When creating a custom style, you have two main approaches:

Option 1: Provide Writing Examples

This is what we did for our AI Academy style. You can either upload documents (Claude supports pdf, doc, and txt files) or paste your text directly into the interface. We recommend including multiple examples of your writing to help Claude better understand your voice and style preferences.

Option 2: Describe Your Style

If you don't have sample content handy, you can describe your desired style instead. Start by selecting a base style that's closest to what you want, then customize it with specific instructions. You can detail your preferred tone, formatting requirements, and any particular phrases or approaches you want Claude to use or avoid.

Test and refine the style based on outputs with the “Preview” section. You can test out how the model answers while answering with the custom style by using different scenarios.(telling a short story, explaining a context, writing an email). You can also ask Claude to edit the style until it finally “feels right”.

Apply Styles Effectively

Select different styles for different contexts, remember that there is no one-style fits all style here. For example:

  • Use formal styles for business documentation

  • Switch to explanatory style for training materials

  • Leverage concise style for quick project updates

  • Create multiple custom styles based on your use-case

Below you can see the end result, us applying AI Academy Copywriter Style. What do you think? Doesn’t it explain the concepts like we do?
