Plus: OpenAI's $200 Pro Plan and X's Image Generator Drama

Hello AI Enthusiast,

This week OpenAI has finally revealed Sora after months of waiting, while also launching a pricey $200 ChatGPT Pro subscription. Meanwhile, X managed to both launch and partially pull back its unrestricted AI image generator in record time. Let's dive in.

The Big Picture 🔊

OpenAI Launches Sora

OpenAI has launched Sora Turbo, their text-to-video model, as part of ChatGPT Plus and Pro subscriptions. The upgraded version offers 1080p videos up to 20 seconds long and includes a storyboard tool for precise control. Plus users get 50 videos monthly at 480p, while Pro users receive 10x more usage. All videos come with built-in watermarks and metadata for transparency.

OpenAI's late entry into video AI is surprising given their usual first-mover approach. Including Sora in ChatGPT Plus is a clever subscription strategy, but we're seeing very limited business adoption, likely because the quality isn't quite production-ready yet.

This feels more like a preview of tomorrow's technology than something ready for business use today.

OpenAI Launches $200 ChatGPT Pro Plan

OpenAI has introduced ChatGPT Pro, a $200 monthly subscription offering unlimited access to their most advanced models including o1, o1-mini, GPT-4o, and Advanced Voice. The plan features o1 pro mode, which uses more compute power for enhanced accuracy in complex tasks.

Apparently o1 Pro excels at coding and complex mathematics with impressive reliability, but the $200 price tag is steep. By combining advanced coding capabilities with features like video generation, it's not clear who OpenAI is targeting beyond developers, who probably aren't interested in the creative tools.

The product's identity seems a bit scattered for its premium price point.

X Briefly Releases Its Image Generator

X briefly launched Aurora, a new image generation feature for its Grok AI assistant, before it disappeared for some users. The generator had minimal restrictions, allowing the creation of images of copyrighted characters and some graphic content, though it blocked nude imagery.

Musk's strategy with Aurora seems calculated, releasing a marginally restricted image generator only to quickly pull it back creates buzz.

It's the classic Musk’s attention-grabbing move that keeps X in the headlines while testing public reaction to controversial AI features.
