How we leverage NotebookLM's new 50-language audio capability
Reading Time: 5 minutes
Hello AI Enthusiast,
Google's NotebookLM rolled out Audio Overviews in more than 50 languages, transforming how we handle multilingual research and documentation. Today, we're showing you how to leverage this breakthrough to turn documents in different languages into engaging, podcast-style conversations in your preferred language, eliminating language barriers in your workflow.
Before we dive into multilingual research, join our free webinar tomorrow June 18 at 5pm CEST with AI Academy founder Gianluca Mauro as he reveals the new AI Agent Bootcamp edition starting next week. Learn to build AI systems that automatically handle your repetitive tasks, make decisions, and integrate with your tools. No coding required.
The Problem
Working with multilingual content is a daily reality for many professionals, language barriers might slow things down. You might have a brilliant research paper in German, key insights in a Japanese report, and supporting data in Spanish but synthesizing all this information requires hours of translation and analysis. Traditional approaches force you to either work in multiple languages simultaneously or lose valuable context through basic translation tools.
How We Do It: Creating Multilingual Audio Insights
Let's walk through how we used NotebookLM's new multilingual capabilities to gather world news about AI developments using sources in English, French, and Mandarin, then generated a comprehensive audio overview in English.
Step 1: Set Up Your Language Preferences
First, configure NotebookLM to output content in your preferred language:
Go to notebooklm.google.com and sign in
Click on your profile icon in the top right corner
Select "Settings" from the dropdown menu
Find the new "Output Language" option
Choose your preferred language for audio and chat responses

Important note: Your Audio Overviews will always be generated in the language you select here, regardless of the source languages. You can change this setting anytime to create content for different audiences.
Step 2: Upload Your Multilingual Sources
NotebookLM can now process and synthesize content from sources in different languages. For our global AI news research, we uploaded:
An English article about OpenAI's latest model announcements from TechCrunch
A French report on EU AI regulation developments
A Mandarin news piece from Chinese tech publications
Additional sources in Japanese about AI adoption in manufacturing
Simply drag and drop your files or paste URLs directly into NotebookLM. The platform automatically detects the language of each source and processes them accordingly.

Pro tip: You can mix any combination of supported languages. NotebookLM will analyze all sources together, finding connections and insights across language barriers.
Step 3: Generate Your Multilingual Audio Overview
Once your sources are uploaded, creating your audio overview is straightforward:
Click the "Generate" button in the Audio Overview section
NotebookLM will analyze all your multilingual sources
The system creates a podcast-style conversation in your selected output language
Wait 2-3 minutes for generation to complete
The resulting audio overview synthesizes insights from all your sources, regardless of their original languages, into a coherent conversation in your preferred language.

Step 4: Customize and Refine Your Audio Content
After generating your initial overview, you can refine the content:
Ask specific questions in your preferred language:
"Can you explain the EU AI regulation developments mentioned in the French Le Monde article and how they compare to the AI announcements discussed in the English TechCrunch piece?"
Request focused summaries:
"Create a summary of the AI breakthroughs from all sources, emphasizing the Mandarin article's findings about Baidu's latest developments."
Template for multilingual research queries:
"Compare the [specific topic] approaches mentioned in the [language 1] source with the findings from the [language 2] document, and explain how they relate to the broader themes in the [language 3] material."

Step 5: Create Content for Different Audiences
The real power comes from switching output languages for different stakeholders:
For English-speaking team members:
Keep output language set to English
Generate executive summaries of international AI developments
For French-speaking colleagues:
Switch output language to French in settings
Generate the same audio overview for European team consumption
For multilingual presentations:
Create multiple versions in different languages
Use the same source materials for consistent information across languages
Real-World Applications
Here are practical ways to use multilingual Audio Overviews in your work:
Global market intelligence: Upload news articles from different regions, generate insights about AI trends worldwide for your strategy team
Competitive analysis: Process announcements and press releases in multiple languages, create unified intelligence about competitor moves
Industry monitoring: Synthesize regulatory updates and policy changes from different countries into coherent briefings
Investment research: Analyze international tech developments and market movements, generate summaries in your working language
Content creation: Process global perspectives on AI topics, create unified insights for blog posts or presentations
Now that you've seen how NotebookLM handles multilingual content, it's time to put this capability to work on your own research challenges.
Your Turn
Ready to break down language barriers in your research? Here's a practical exercise:
Identify a multilingual research challenge you're currently facing, perhaps competitor analysis across different markets, international best practices in your field, or global regulatory compliance.
Gather 3-5 sources in different languages related to your topic. These could be:
Research papers or reports
News articles from international sources
Government documents or policies
Industry analyses from different regions
Set up NotebookLM with your preferred output language and upload your multilingual sources.
Generate your first multilingual Audio Overview and listen to how NotebookLM synthesizes insights across languages.
Test the chat feature by asking specific questions about connections between sources in different languages.
Bonus challenge: Try switching your output language setting and regenerating the same overview for a colleague who speaks a different language. You'll see how the same insights can be presented to different linguistic audiences.
Remember, this feature is still evolving, so experiment with different language combinations and source types to discover what works best for your specific needs.
